I went to law school intending to practice, passed the bar, and then took a job covering the courts for a newspaper in San Antonio in 2002. I never looked back. Courts are where policy arguments finally have to stand up on their own, without the press conference around them.

I have covered federal courts, the Supreme Court term by term, immigration law, and the long series of legal fights over health coverage, from the first Affordable Care Act challenges to the state abortion cases that followed Dobbs. I write a lot of question-and-answer pieces, because that is what readers actually ask me: what did the court decide, and what does it change.

I grew up in San Antonio, studied government at the University of Texas at Austin, and earned my law degree at Georgetown. I live in Denver.
