I am a features writer, which mostly means I hang around. I have spent the better part of my career, since 2001, in the back rooms of department stores, at studio lots and record labels, at shopping-mall food courts and at trade shows in Las Vegas, watching how things get sold and why people buy them.

That has meant writing about the collapse of the mall and the rise of the box on the porch, the streaming wars, the newspaper business I work in, and the strange economics of being famous on the internet. I like a long story with a real person at the center of it, and I like it best when the numbers and the person tell the same story.
