I edit every story before it runs. I started on a newspaper copy desk in Charlotte in 1991 and spent most of the next three decades editing other people's reporting at regional papers and wire desks, which is a job that mostly consists of asking "how do we know that?" until the answer is good enough.

When we make a mistake, I write the correction. When a story needs explaining, I write the editor's note. Everything else on this site has someone else's name on it, and that is how it should be.
